Green Construction in Spokane

By building green, we mean turning your house into an energy efficient structure. When most people think about their green practices, they think about energy-efficient cars, recycling soda cans, or using more earth-friendly light bulbs. But what about your house? Is your house more energy-efficient? Is your house contributing to the problem of the solution? Most importantly, are you saving money while you're saving energy?

One of the greatest benefits of building a green house is that it can save you money in the long-term. Using LED Lights around your house is a start. But there is more than one way to save money:

ROOF: Composite or Metal

Composite roofing is now offered with a different granule makeup which deflects the sun’s UV rays more efficiently than standard shingles do, causing your house to use less energy to keep it cool inside.

Improved metal roofing is also available with a different coating of paint that deflects UV rays and allows less heat to transfer through the metal.

ROOF & SIDING: Underlayment

Every roof must have an underlayment of some kind. Most houses use 4’x8’ OSB sheathing. You can now buy an OSB panel with a thin layer of foil on both sides. This keeps the heat and cold from transferring through the underlayment, making a considerable difference in energy efficiency.

James Hardie siding is considered a green building product because of its longevity and water shedding capability. And because it is constructed of cement and fiber, it also helps make your house more fire proof.

Vinyl siding has been improved with a build-in insulated backing, giving you house a higher R value.

The best way to keep your house more energy-efficient is to boost your total R value (a measure of thermal resistance). The most cost effective was to achieve this is to raise the insulation level in your walls and ceiling. There are many different kinds of insulation that can be installed in a house to create better R values for your particular needs.

Another way to conserve on energy is to insulate between floor levels, allowing you to heat or cool rooms that are being used.

Lastly, there are many choices of energy-star-rated appliances, including hot water tanks, furnaces and toilets that use less gas, electricity and water to function.

Northern Territory is proud to be a part of the solution rather than the problem. We at Northern Territory recycle as many materials as possible such as old metal roofing and siding, old copper and aluminum wiring, and old windows and doors. Many old fixtures are pulled out of a house and donated to Habitat for Humanity for re-use. Northern Territory is also in the process of constructing a storage building to hold excess materials that cannot be returned because they have been custom ordered or partially cut.
